Description:
Honolulu is the capital of the State of Hawaii, in the United States. It was discovered in 1792 or 1794 (1) by Captain William Brown and used at first as an anchorage, where provisions and water could be kept safely. The first wharf appeared in 1825, opening the way to further improvements and regulations, which would result in a fully functional harbor. Because it was the only deepwater port in mid-pacific, it quickly grew in importance, and the tumultous times that came with Hawaii's annexation by the United States didn't stop Honolulu from becoming a major maritime center.

(1) Sources disagree: according to Edward D. Beechert (Honolulu Crossroads of the Pacific, 1991) and the Encyclopaedia Universalis, Honolulu was discovered in 1792, while the Encyclopædia Britannica (and Wikipedia) places this event in 1794.
