Description:

A boy is seen from the side, sitting at a table and drawing with great concentration from a picture placed upright in front of him. The image the boy is copying is an etching by Jean-Jacques Flipart, after a painting by Jean-Baptiste Chardin titled Young Student Drawing (Le jeune élève dessinant).

The caption reads in the original French: Le copiste de Chardin.

Images courtesy of the National Gallery of Art, Washington and the Kimbell Art Museum, respectively.
