Description:

Plate showing the helicoid shells of five land snails from Central and South America assigned to the genus Bulinus by the author, most of them seen from the front and/or back . The name assigned by the author is given first, followed by the current accepted name, when known, in parentheses:

  • 18. Bulinus princeps (Orthalicus princeps)
  • 19. Bulinus modestus (Bostryx modestus)
  • 20, 20x. Bulinus varians
  • 21. Bulinus tigris
  • 22, 22x. Bulinus albicans (Bostryx albicans)

In a later edition of this book, the author states that his father penned most of the illustrations, crediting himself only for the “Chiton, Cardium, Murex, and Typhis” series. The inscription “C.B.S. Jun. exc. (for excudit)” could then mean that G. B. Sowerby II took care of the etching work, or at least of transferring the drawings onto the metal plate.
