Description:

Two boys play with puppets representing fighting knights, complete with shields and swords. A rope passes through the puppets’ bellies, and their legs were likely weighted with lead to allow the children to mimic a sword fight.
This illustration was drawn after Herrad of landsberg’s manuscript, Hortus deliciarum, which was destroyed in 1870.
