Description:

A woman tumbles from the gondola of a balloon in flight above a dense array of rooftops.

Sophie Blanchard was an aeronaut and the widow of Pierre Blanchard, an aeronaut himself. On July 6, 1819, during a public aerial exhibition, the fireworks she was to ignite set her balloon ablaze, causing her to fall from the gondola to the rooftops below.

The caption reads in the original French: Mort de madame Blanchard.
