Description:
A furious-looking Hagen raises his spear to strike Siegfried, who drinks from a spring with his back turned. Above and below the main motif, smaller illustrations related to the story are framed by ornamental vegetation.
The caption reads in the original German:
Er schoß durch das Kreuz ihn, daß aus der Wunde sprang
Das Blut ihm von dem Herzen auf gegen Hagens Gewand.
