A furious-looking Hagen wields a spear, ready to strike Siegfried who is drinking from a spring with his back turned to him. Below and above the main motif, smaller illustrations related to the story are framed with ornamental vegetation.
The caption reads in the original German:

Er schoß durch das Kreuz ihn, daß aus der Wunde sprang
