Description:

A man wearing working-class clothes and carrying a loaf of bread despite his cuffed hands is seen walking on a broad country road between two stern and haughty police officers.

In his illustrations for Le chambard socialiste, Steinlen used the alias Petit Pierre, thus playing on his name, which, in German, means "little stone."

The headline reads in the original French: Sans le Sou !, and the caption: Ah ! si au lieu d'un pain j'avais volé cent millions...
