Description:
The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a bird in the family Columbidae native to the island of Mauritius, where it was discovered in the 1590s. It was a turkey-sized flightless bird adapted to an environment free from large ground-dwelling predators. It became extinct in the late seventeenth century.
The caption reads in the original German: Der Plumpe Dronte (Didus ineptus).
