Description

A shop in Paris between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries. This illustration shows how a system of wooden shutters was used to isolate the shop from the street. According to Viollet-le-Duc, until the late fourteenth century shops weren’t usually separated by a front window and had direct access to the street.
