European Fire-Bellied Toad and Yellow-Bellied Toad

Two yellow-bellied toads (Bombina variegata) are partially submerged in a pond, while three European fire-bellied toads (Bombina bombina) occupy the bank, one leaping to seize a fly. The illustration was rendered from observation in a glass terrarium.

Both yellow-bellied and fire-bellied toads belong to the family Bombinatoridae. they have brightly colored ventral sides which they use to warn predators that they are toxic, due to the poison produced by their skin.
